Westward expansion into new territory produced a continuous debate over slavery which increasingly threatened to divide the nation. And when Abraham Lincoln, an anti-slavery candidate for Presidency, won the election and had no national consensus to settle the matter of slavery's future, a southern secession determined the fate of the Union.
