Longstanding regionalism which ultimately led to the secession of the southern states was not totally eradicated during the Civil War and still exists in our political lives today.

The Battle of Gettysburg, 1863
- fought over the secession of the Confederate States
- 11 southern slave states declared their secession from the United States and formed
"the Confederacy" after the election of 1860 - the other 25 states supported the federal government, "the Union"
- after 4 years of war, the Confederacy surrendered & slavery was outlawed everywhere in the U.S.
Longstanding Regionalism
- Regionalism within the United States did not completely end after the Civil War
- It is easy to see how even in 2008, the geographical location of states influences their political leanings
